Esme sighed. She knew he was lying, but she wasn't going to call him
on it. 'Maybe it is, but look how long it took for it to come right in the
end. And there's still discrimination, now.' Her eyes turned sad.
'I don't know, Ross... My powers would give me an edge over them,
yes, but too many, and not even my elemental side would be able to
help much. It worries me, and I know I'm not the only one worried.
You can see it in the eyes of every student here. Even the humans have
thought it over, if only because they could get caught in the middle of it.
'I would gladly stand alongside the other supes to defend this school,
but... would the humans?' She pointed down at a couple running
together. 'Marie and Carlos, for example. They love each other, and I
see them every day in the courtyard. But... one is human, and the other
isn't. I won't say which, though.
'The human... has made some comments about supes. And the
supernatural's face...' She sighed sadly. 'It hurts them, badly, every
time they hear those comments. And yet, they still try to stay with the
person they love.'
She stared down, watching them, as they ran around the courtyard
and disappeared from sight. With a sigh, she stood up, and collected
her sword from beside the chair. 'I'm going to head for the canteen,
Ross. Do you want to come, too?' She somehow managed a smile. 'This
will be my first time going in there, actually, so I have no idea what to
expect.'
