History» There are not many ways that one can hide an angel- sure, their powers may be a tad understated when it comes to 'magicking' things, but to hide a pair of budding wings takes practice. For the Claes brothers it was all taken in stride. A strong familial bond meant that the two of them got to work out the kinks of their abilities together, two fair angel brothers. Having their angelic mother in the picture meant that they were never short of a role model for powers. They didn't have much money, but they had each other to help pave the way for the life of a supernatural hardship. Their quiet presence in the world meant that very few threats came their way. The brothers grew up in a homeschooling environment in the countryside- any exhibition of power was kept between the two of them as their mother schooled them. They settled their differences like men, testing their strength and powers against one another, learning restraint from a young age.
By the time Lucas was twelve, he and Mathis were well aware of the threat of the Holy Cross hunters- it was only a matter of time until they were found out, their little safe haven disturbed by the bitter real world. There was a growing tension with their mother, who weighed the benefits of looking after her boys alone, or going their separate ways. Though desperation was present, the move to send the boys to St. Gabriel was well-thought out on their mother Léa's part. It was for the best for she herself to go into hiding, a leave them in the trusted hands of the academy. They said their goodbyes, and Lucas was left in the capable hands of Mathis, to make the trip to the States and enrol themselves in the school, only a small fortune to their names.
Once arrived at the school, Mathis was able to focus on his own achievements, rather than his role as older brother. He of course kept a close eye on Lucas, but had the peace of mind of being relatively safe from the Holy Cross members. Being six years older than his freshman brother meant that he was already eligible to join the college, however he would start two years behind and simply accelerate his studies.
Mathis was the other side of the coin compared to his brother. While Lucas preferred to quietly study, or enjoy the company of likeminded gentle students, Mathis went a bit wild with his freedom. Here was a chance to be among those his age, influenced as they were by the heady feeling of college life, though they shared the campus with high schoolers. It was a new world for him, but one he was prepared for. Mathis could be the charmer, loud and boisterous, the life of the party, and somehow not quite as naive as he should have been. He was always quick to a retort, and even quicker to be the first to steal the show.
Once he graduated and finished his studies, Mathis decided it was high time he took his fate in to his own hands. At this point in his life, at the ripe age of twenty two, he decided he had to be on his own. He left things amicably with Lucas and strode in to the world on his own, confident his brother would be looked after. For the next three years he traveled and worked intermittently, soaking up culture and experiences left and right. It was apparent that he needed to get something out of his system. It wasn't until his twenty fifth birthday that he felt the need to slow things down. He couldn't carry on irresponsibly forever, and his lifestyle was tiring. He wasn't giving up freedom, he was simply exchanging wildness for security. As immediately gratifying as travel could be, it lacked long term rewards and he ultimately felt unsatisfied.
Mat returned to St. Gabriel subdued but happy, to pursue what he originally intended to be teaching. He quickly realized that he wasn't as passionate for those sorts of trials as he had assumed, and later used his training to achieve the position of librarian, and eventually head librarian at the school. This worked excellently for the brothers- Lucas in the gardens and Mathis in the library, each absorbed in helping the school to function and dealing with their passions on a daily basis.
