Born into a wealthy and prestigious family, Aria Lestoat never wanted for anything. Spoiled, demanding and needy, the one thing Aria always wanted but was denied was the affection and love of her parents, who were far too busy attending social gatherings and being as in the limelight as they were destined to be. From a young age, Aria was shoved into this very same light, portrayed as the perfect daughter in the perfect family, despite the fact that they were anything but in reality. Still, she could not complain or want for much. Although the only love she ever received seemed to be from the countless nannies that she got fired until she found the right one, Aria grew to be an extremely independent young woman, under the false pretence that she didn't need anyone in her life. It wasn't until she hit twelve that the secret of her mothers condition came out and, thus, so did Aria's. As a child, she had always thought that the tail she had? That was normal! Every girl had one, huh? Of course, that was a misguided attempt at her mind to convince her she was normal when she was clearly anything but that.
A mermaid.
At first, she had thought it was the coolest thing ever. What twelve year old girl didn't want to be a mermaid? It was every girls dream. Unfortunately, she soon realised that it was more of a curse than anything else, especially when disaster struck and her parents were murdered by people who considered her mother (and herself by default) to be an abomination. The last and only nanny Aria had ever cared for had hidden the girl away when the attack had happened- they, the only survivors in a house full of waiting staff, eventually fled to the island that was said to hold many fugitives in these trying times. At fourteen years old, without parents and without a nanny, Aria Lestoat was truly alone for the first time in her life. But she adapted to her surroundings. She learned how to be that popular, secretive girl, the only who wore a mask more than she wore anything else, never letting it slip for fear that people would see who she really was- an insecure, scared and lonely little girl.

RP Sample»Ophelia didn't really expect anyone to find her, considering there were only a select handful of people who knew that she frequented the astronomy tower at certain times anyway. Although the darkness was something that caused stirrings of fear within her, she found it easily overcome in this particular tower, because she wanted to be here and that seemed to be enough to send the darkness away. At any other times, she would have hated to be alone and in the dark- and she still wasn't completely comfortable with it now, considering her hands were gripping onto the ledge tightly enough that her knuckles were turning a whitely shade of fear. But Selwyn's weren't supposed to be afraid of anything, and Ophelia had to remind herself of that constantly. She was still a Selwyn, whether any of them liked it or not, and she couldn't do anything about her family, or her own failings. She just had to make sure she didn't do anything else that they would see as embarrassing for the family reputation.
The sudden beam of light had her heart racing, and she spun to face whoever had interrupted her, a million thoughts racing through her mind as her heart beat faster. Of course, this was all an irrational reaction to the fear that coursed through her veins- there wasn't anything dangerous at Hogwarts, at least not in Ophelia's naive mind. Hogwarts was said to be the safest place in wizarding Britain- said to be even safer in Gringrotts, although that was very hard to believe! Her mind was put at rest immediately, as she just about managed to see who the intruder was before the light was put out again, and she heaved a sigh of relief, hands dropping from where they had been clutching the window sill behind her back. "Apollo..." she said in greeting, with obvious relief in her tone, inwardly berating herself for having such a skittish reaction. That was definitely something her parents and siblings would find both hilarious and stupid, and Ophelia wanted nothing more than to be accepted by them for who she was- she couldn't be as dark and twisted as the Slytherins they were.
Although... that didn't mean to say that Ophelia thought all Slytherins were the same. Whilst it was true that, upon her first meeting with Apollo, she had thought him to be just like all of the other people from his house who had tormented her at some point, she had quickly come to realise that her initial judgement had been wrong. After all, Ophelia would hardly have dated someone who she thought to be cruel or mean, as her siblings were. Apollo had proven to be a good friend, even after their break up, and if there was anyone that Ophelia should want to find her up here in the tower, it was him. They had had an odd relationship, and now had an odd friendship, but that had never stopped them before.
Ophelia smiled a little shyly as he spoke of remembering her habit of escaping to the astronomy tower, and felt a tug that the would remember things about her that other people tend to forget. They were good friends, she had to remember, and that was obviously the reason why he chose to remember that she was afraid of the dark, too. "It was an act of sheer bravery on my part." she replied teasingly, glancing back towards the window and shivering a little, because it was dark out there... but she had company now, and that was helpful of course. "You're here now, anyway, so I don't have to be scared, right?" she shrugged lightly, smiling at him all the while.
